Blisters are one of the most common foot problems experience by all ages. They can appear quickly and be very painful, so let’s show you some simple things you can do to stop them forming in the first place.

How To Prevent Blisters On Your Feet

Choose The Right Shoes

Wearing the right shoes is crucial, not just for comfort but to prevent rubbing and blisters as well.

You want to make sure they are not too tight or too loose so that the foot rubs against your skin causing friction and blistering. This applies to both the size of the shoe and the width of the shoe.

It is much more common these days to find wide fit shoes in all styles and sizes, so if your feet are wider than standard sizes, always ask for wide fit options when shopping for new shoes.

If you are constantly struggling to find shoes that fit well off the shelf, try some insoles to help make the shoe fit better. Custom insoles can be made just for you by a qualified podiatrist, or you can try out some ready-made ones first (you can usually buy these in any good shoe shop or pharmacies).

New shoes need to be broken in gently to prevent them causing blisters on your feet. Don’t wear new shoes for long periods of time. Rather opt for wearing them for short walks or runs to start with, and allow your feet to get used to them first.

Wear Good Quality Socks

Always choose the right socks for your shoes. Some shoes need a shorter sock, others may need a longer sock, thicker sock, or even double socks.

Socks made from natural materials, like cotton or bamboos, are much better for your feet than ones made from synthetic materials. They absorb moisture around your feet and help to keep your feet dry, which can help prevent blisters on your feet.

Good quality socks are often more expensive, but they usually last much longer and so are definitely worth the investment.

Moisturise Regularly

By keeping your feet moisturised, your skin stays soft and smooth. This stops cracks and callouses from forming and potentially turning into more painful cracks and blisters.

Lubricate Your Feet For Running

If you’re a keen runner, think about lubricating your feet before running. This is especially important for long-distance running.

It’s the friction between your foot, socks and shoes that causes your skin to develop blisters. By lubricating your feet, you can stop the friction and instead allow your feet and socks to slide against each other instead of rub against each other.

Speak to your podiatrist to get a recommendation on what is best to use to lubricate your feet in order to prevent blisters.

Keep Your Feet Dry

Keeping your feet dry can help to prevent blisters on your feet. Make sure you dry your feet properly after showering.

You can also use things like antiperspirant sprays or powders in your socks and shoes to help draw moisture away from your feet.

Stay Hydrated

Dehydration can be a contributing factor when it comes to blisters – stay hydrated by drinking water regularly and always before and after exercising.

Protect Problem Spots

If you’ve got spots on your feet that are prone to blistering, make sure you protect them as much as possible.

You can apply adhesives, bandages, or plasters to help cover the area and prevent a blister from forming.

Use Custom Orthotics

Custom orthotics could be recommended by your podiatrist if you are regularly experiencing blisters or other foot problems.

They can help your foot fit your shoes better and therefore prevent the chafing associated with the onset of blisters on your feet.
