Work from home shoes: which are best?

One of the many great things about working from home—comfortable shoes. Your work from home shoes can’t be seen, so you can wear what you like. Uncomfortable heels, tight leather shoes and expensive footwear can be a thing of the past. Slippers, anyone?

Generally, working from home is good for your feet, because you get to ditch those painful formal shoes. However, it’s still a good idea to look after your feet. Not all comfortable shoes provide the support you need. We’ve picked some of our favourites.

But first: a tip on work from home shoes

If you change your job or working circumstances, you might find yourself in a sudden transition from office to home. And that can be a change for your feet. You may find that a rapid change in your daily footwear causes discomfort or pain. If that’s the case, see your podiatrist for individual advice.

What to look for in work from home shoes

Many people go for comfort alone, without thinking of any other factors.  But foot support is important, especially if you’re working from home every day. You can absolutely combine comfort, support and style with your working from home shoes.

Is it okay to go barefoot when working from home?

Yes, there’s no reason to wear shoes if you prefer the freedom of going barefoot. If you get any foot pain, put on shoes with support. If you are not used to being barefoot most of the day, you may find it takes a bit of adjusting.

Podiatrist-approved work from home shoes pick #1 Archies Arch Support Slides, $60.00

Top pick. Archies has great arch support and an elevated heel. The foam material moulds to your feet which make them feel comfortable and cosy. The design is sturdy, they come in plenty of colours and are suitable for men and women. And at sixty bucks, it’s a high quality affordable option.

Podiatrist-approved work from home shoes pick #2 Frankie 4 Malone Black Weave, $229.95

These are great because they have the platform with a footbed on top. This combo gives plenty of cushioning support for your foot. This shoe has 700+ reviews, which is always a good sign of happy customers. Frankie 4 is a trusted range because it’s created by podiatrists, so comfort and support is always key with this brand. We also like the Riviera Tan Slides as another alternative. If you want comfort, support and style, this is a great choice.

Podiatrist-approved work from home shoes pick #3 Ecco Cozmo Leather Two-Strap Sandal, $219.95

ecco cosmo

Ecco is known for nice comfortable shoes, with plenty of adjustable straps, which allows you to control the fit. Leather is popular as it moulds to your feet and it stays soft and supple with prolonged wear. The footbed and the arch give great support and the tread on the sole gives you great grip on a variety of surfaces. You could easily go on your afternoon walk wearing these—no need to change into sneakers.

We see plenty of patients wearing Merrell shoes in our clinics. If you want more of a sneaker-level of support, Merrell is a great brand choice. This is designed as a running shoe, so if you plan to step out for a jog, you’re ready to go. The fit is engineered for support and comfort while the recycled fabric is breathable.

Podiatrist-approved work from home shoes pick #5 Olukai Pūpū Mua Slipper, $229.99

pupu mua sandal

If you want true daily comfort of slippers, consider investing in quality. Olukai is a Hawaiian shoe brand that deserves more acclaim, because its range is fabulous. The brand always gives meaning behind each shoe, and the range is always comfortable. Cheaper slippers tend to have a very flat base, but these slippers have a solid footbed and arch, which gives you more support. Unfortunately the website product description doesn’t detail enough about the materials and manufacturing, but they look like a fluffy cloud, so they’re forgiven (for now).

Podiatrist-approved work from home shoes pick #6 Bared Knitted Home Boot, $259

Cold winter days need cosy work from home shoes, and these boots from Bared fit perfectly. Classic Ugg Boots tend to be lacking in support, so these options fare better. With a footbed, midsole and sturdy outsole, they’ll be more comfortable and less likely to cause aching feet than a flat thin boot. If you want maximum warmth and comfort, make these your choice.

Tips for choosing work from home shoes

  • If you’ll be wearing these shoes every workday 9-5, invest in quality. Your feet need the support.
  • Be mindful that your feet take time to adjust if you suddenly change shoes or go barefoot
  • It’s fine to work from home barefoot, just be mindful of foot pain, and put shoes on for half the day at first
  • Comfort is great, but also look for arch support as well
  • If you start to suffer foot pain, see your podiatrist
