Toenail fungus can lead to unsightly nails, weakened nail structure, breakage and deformity, and impact daily living.
Fungal toenails: a common, but embarrassing problem
Toenail fungus, also known as onychomycosis, is a common infection affecting around 10% of the population. It’s caused by microscopic fungi that thrive in warm, moist environments. Toenail fungus infections often begin with subtle discoloration, such as white, yellow, or brown spots on the nail, and progress to more severe symptoms like thickening, brittleness, crumbling edges, or even separation of the nail from the nail bed.
Over time, fungal infections of the toenail can weaken the nail’s structure, making it prone to breakage and deformity. Infections can also spread to neighbouring nails. As well as cosmetic concerns, toenail fungus can cause discomfort or pain when pressure is applied to the affected area, impacting daily activities such as walking or wearing shoes.
However, with a proper diagnosis and treatment you can restore nail health and prevent further complications.
Laser therapy is a safe and effective treatment for toenail fungus.
Treating toenail fungus can be challenging.
Conventional treatments for nail fungus such as antifungal creams, oral medications and nail removal (in severe cases) have varying success rates and may also lead to adverse reactions in some patients.
However, laser therapy has been proven to be an effective treatment for toenail fungus, offering a targeted approach to eliminating fungal infections. Clinical studies show that laser therapy combined with topical or oral antifungal medications can be up to 91% effective.
In addition, research shows that overall, toenail fungus laser treatment is generally safe with no significant adverse events reported. In fact, most patients experience only a mild warming sensation during treatment.
Laser therapy has been shown to be a relatively safe and effective treatment for nail fungus.
How laser therapy treats toenail fungus
Laser therapy is an advanced treatment for toenail fungus, which uses focused light energy to target and destroy fungal cells while preserving healthy tissue.
The laser penetrates the nail and nail bed, where it generates heat. The fungal pigments absorb the heat which disrupts the cellular structure of the fungus, stopping its ability to grow or spread.
This non-invasive procedure is not only effective but is a preferred option for many patients, particularly those who can’t or don’t want to take traditional oral medications.
Who is it for?
To receive laser therapy, it’s important to be diagnosed with fungal infection first. Other nail conditions which are not fungal in nature, can have similar symptoms. Signs of a fungal toenail infection are nails that are:
Discoloured
Deformed
Thickened
Brittle
Ragged / Crumbling
Lifting
Pitted
Smelly
If you have any of the above symptoms, make an appointment with our experienced podiatrists so we can properly diagnose your condition and recommend the right treatment.
What conditions are not suited to laser therapy?
Not all fungal nails should be treated with laser therapy. These include: Severe cases where every toenail is affected, Severely damaged toenails that are extremely thick and changed in shape. In these cases, we generally recommend other treatment first before moving to laser therapy.

What to expect
If you are diagnosed with a fungal toenail infection, your treatment plan will depend upon the severity of the infection, how many nails are affected, your general health, and medical history.
Treatment of fungal nails may include:
- Topical anti-fungal treatments that are applied directly to the affected nail
- Oral medication to treat the fungal infection
- Photodynamic Therapy (PACT®) which is a type of LED treatment
- Laser treatment for toenail fungus.
Generally, we recommend a combination of treatments for best results. In severe cases it may be necessary to remove the affected toenail before commencing treatment.
